This was a new threshold that our servers had not experienced at all, not even at launch. On Saturday morning Pacific time, we suffered a global outage due to a sudden, significant surge in traffic. With that in mind, to explain what’s been going on, we’ll be focusing on the downtimes experienced between Saturday October 9 to now. ![]() The global database also has a back-up in case the main fails. Most of your in-game actions are performed against this regional database because it’s faster, and your character is “locked” there to maintain the individual character record integrity. So to alleviate load and latency on our global database, each region–NA, EU, and Asia–has individual databases that also store your character’s information and progress, and your region’s database will periodically write to the global one. As you can imagine, that’s a big task for one database, and wouldn’t cope on its own. First, there’s our global database, which exists as the single source of truth for all your character information and progress. Let’s start at the beginning.īefore we talk about the problems, we’ll briefly give you some context as to how our server databases work. ![]() We’re going to get a little bit into the weeds here with some engineering specifics, but we hope that overall this helps you understand why these outages have been occurring and what we’ve been doing to address each instance, as well as how we’re investigating the overall root cause. Our team, with the help of others at Blizzard, are working to bring the game experience to a place that feels good for everyone. This is not a complete solve to us, and we are continuing to work on this issue. A small number of players have experienced character progression loss–moving forward, any loss due to a server crash should be limited to several minutes. Tl dr: Our server outages have not been caused by a singular issue we are solving each problem as they arise, with both mitigating solves and longer-term architectural changes. ![]() We also want to give you some insight into how we’re moving forward. While the event was ladder only in the original game, and therefore not available to offline players without the use of mods, Diablo II: Resurrected has ladder features such as special Runewords and Uber bosses enabled for everyone, with the Diablo Clone spawned for the low price of just one Stone of Jordan - somewhat offset by the requirement of actually finding it on your own.Since the launch of Diablo II: Resurrected, we have been experiencing multiple server issues, and we wanted to provide some transparency around what is causing these issues and the steps we have taken so far to address them. Increasing skills, attributes, resistances, and experience gain, the unique small charm is highly sought after and, along with the Hellfire Torch obtained from the Uber Tristram event, is a regular part of any endgame build.įor those of you playing offline and therefore not able to benefit from the resources of an entire community, the summoning plays out a little differently. This makes spawning the Clone a community event, where players will pool their stones together and coordinate a time to sell them in order to ensure that a greater number of players can get onto the same server in order to fight the boss.Īll of this effort is well rewarded though, as the Diablo Clone drops a single Annihilus Charm per game. ![]() Because the Clone spawns in every active Hell difficulty game running on that server, rather than just the game in which the last Stone of Jordan is sold, players can coordinate this by looking up IP and server information, then creating games until enough players happen to land on the same server. Once enough rings are sold, the screen will shake and the message "Diablo Walks the Earth" will appear, indicating that Uber Diablo will now spawn in place of the first Super Unique monster encountered within the game. While this harder version of Diablo is no longer the most difficult boss in the game, the real challenge in guaranteeing a spawn like this is getting so many stones together and selling them across the same server. Uber Diablo, aka the Diablo Clone, is a special event boss which spawns after selling a random number between 80 and 125 Stones of Jordan in online games on the same server, and although that high number of unique rings was required to combat rampant duping in the original Diablo II, the system has remained in place for Resurrected. The first Uber Diablo Clone has been spawned on Diablo II: Resurrected servers! Twitch streamer PapaChrisTV marshalled his community to obtain 125 Stones of Jordan, with the last unique ring sold by Youtuber Lucky Luciano to spawn the boss for every Hell difficulty game across the server and allowing scores of players to obtain the coveted Annihilus Charm.
